Distance learning courses?

My local education establishment has let me down less than 24 hours before my course was due to start by cancelling it. I am now considering distance learning, and would be looking to complete A level accountancy in a year. How good are distance learning courses? I am aware of OU and it's reputation, but what about the smaller companies? And does anybody know of any pitfalls using such a learning avenue?

  1. Distance learning has advantages -- you work at your own pace and usually at your own time. There are times, however, when you may be required to join a chatroom at a specified time. You are usually also required to answer a posted question by the instructors. One of the problems of Distance Learning is that if you have a question you need an immediate answer to- that is sometimes delayed as you will email your instructor and wait for an answer. TIP __ when you send a question - be sure to keep a copy of it for your records. I had instructors that replied later and/or not on top of the email I sent and I had to try and remember the question. Good Luck
  2. Sorry to hear your course has gone pear-shaped. With the OU i believe there are set dates on which you can begin a course. With the other distance learning schools you can begin when you wish. I have done two long distances courses over the years and really enjoyed them.I am now looking for another but haven't decided on the subject yet. With something like accountancy there must be something like a federation or whatever of accountants(if you know what i mean) that you could call up for advice on which distance learning schools give credits that are recognised-having said that an A level is an a level wherever you get it from? Surf around and see what catches your eye.Don't give up.Best of luck. edit: good answer from sundazee
