Can you have your own practice as a Pyschiatrist?

I am thinking of getting a Master in Social Work so that I can get a license for therapy. My cousin recently got a MS in Psych but she said that the only downfall was that she could not have her own practice with just her Masters. She lives in NY so I am not sure if it is different there or if that is true for all states. Just need some answers or advice on which route I should take. Psychology Masters is offered online whereas a MSW would not do me any justice in getting it online due to stipulations on what I can do with that degree.

  1. During recent decades the professions of psychology (including psychiatry) and social work have become much more regulated. Licensing requirements can vary, so you need to do some research. I would suggest you head for several possible careers and qualifications (1) A masters plus pass the test for Licensed Clinical Psychologist or Licensed Clinical Social Worker; (2) A PhD in psychology (3) or psychiatry, but be aware that in recent years, psychiatrists have become more and more confined to dispensing prescription drugs, and not therapy (though many are capable of giving therapy).
