Is it worth me getting my masters degree?

I have a bachelors degree in Safety and currently I am a safety and environmental manager for a midsize company. I would like to get my degree in environmental engineering. Do Masters Degrees usually have a good return on your investment? Should I go back to school for something that I have already broke into? What is your opinions?

  1. I would probably recommend it, although you need to take into account that I actually *have* a MS in EnvE and am working on a Ph.D. in the same right now. :) I'm not terribly familiar with what a safety-type degree entails, but adding something with "engineering" attached to it to your credentials might make you more marketable. I've had several friends come in from science fields and leave with decent engineering design jobs if that's something you are at all interested in. This somewhat depends on your current job responsibilities, but you may also find more areas and directions to go in with the additional degree than you currently have available to you. You probably at least have your feet wet (presumably quite wet in the regulatory realm!), and it might not hurt to go wade around in some deeper water. I'd suggest perhaps looking at the content of the degree at a school or two that you are interested in, and perhaps even try to contact someone in the program to see how this might fit in with your plans/goals/interests. In my experience, they're usually more than happy to entertain inquiries from professionals, since you all bring a different set of skills and background to the table to work with. . . and don't tend to freak out over what are really small difficulties.
