Which masters degree would be most beneficial?

I am interested in working as a elementary and high school counselor. Then eventually I would like to work at a college/university as an advisor or program director. Which masters degree would be most beneficial for this? I have considered a masters in school counseling. Should I look more into other degrees, like educational psychology or higher education?

Public Comments

  1. research by going to various schools and see what the councellors there have and also find out the programmes of the different masters to find out what excatly you will have to do and from there you will have a decison
  2. Public schools have more specific requirements about the qualifications for counseling jobs. If you really want to be a school counselor, find out what they require to get a counseling credential in the state where you want to work, and go for that one. Jobs in student affairs in higher ed usually require a masters degree, but there is no one degree that's required. A degree in student development, college student personnel, or higher education is preferable (and it's excellent preparation for this kind of work), but people come into these jobs with all kinds of degrees, especially if they have experience in the field. If you've been working in K-12 for a long time--especially with younger kids--you may have a little trouble convincing them that your experience is relevant enough, but it's not out of the question.
