- I have a friend who has a bachelors degree in psychology, she looked forever for a job, but eventually got one a girls runaway shelter making aroung ten bucks an hour, with a maters she would make more money but have the same job title..
- With psychology as your subject, you are capable of counselling a lot many people, who are suffering from various psychological problems. This I say assuming that you have necessary skills to counsel them on how to get rid of their problems. But, with a Masters Degree, you would tend to charge more. A person with a Bachelors Degree would charge nominally and attract more patients. Try to compete with them. You should do well.
- Let me just preface this by saying: I've been in college for 10 years. The truth is, you can get hired doing outpatient community mental health practically anywhere with a masters-level degree in social work or marriage and family therapy. I am in my last year of my doctorate of psychology degre (Psy.D.). I chose this degree because 1. I'm not a born-researcher, 2. I do want to do therapy, 3. I don't want to be limited. With a doctorate, I can write, teach, practice, supervise, administrate, perform any kind of assessments, and so on. A licensed social worker or MFT can practice independently, and managed care loves to pay less for their services. Your decision comes down to how long you want to be in school (how much debt), and how many options you want to have in terms of career advancement and pay upon graduation. As far as BA in psychology goes, I used to joke that practically everyone has a BA in psychology. They're all but issued with free samples at the grocery store. You can get a job with one, but probably not one you'll enjoy much--in this field.
- Anyone can get a Masters in psychology but not anyone can be good at being a therapist. I started in the field while working on a BA. I worked in the lowest of the low in the field but gained a lot of experience in working with people. As a BA the best you can hope for is a job as a mental health counselor. Its bad money but good experience. With a MA you can do therapy and if you get licenced you can bill Insurance Companies. My advice is to make sure you get your degree in Clinical Psychology. You learn more about neurology and bio psychology. Focus on a specific disipline within the field and become as much as an expert as you can. Above all, read, read and read. All knowledge is important to this field in one way or another.
