Has anyone taken a distance learning course in TESOL with the University of Birmingham?

Looking to take a course in TESOL from Japan, where I live, I'm a bit apprehensive about the quality of distance learning compared to classroom based tuition - any advice would be very much appreciated

  1. My first thought was 'don't do it!', and upon further thought... it's still 'don't do it!' I'm sure you could take the time off work (it's only a month) to study the proper course, preferably CELTA. It's available in Japan and would be so much more worth while in the end. On-line courses in TESOL are still not widely accepted in most countries. Even a dodgy course at a dodgy school is better than on-line. Good luck.
  2. I am also not so sure if it is recommended, but must say that the University of Birmingham is a good institution with a good reputation, and distance education would be a quality option. I suggest that you'll ask at Dave's ESK Cafe and similar forums what do employers in Japan think about it, because I know that in Japan they are particularly peculiar about ESL degrees.
