Is distance learning effective and/or worthwhile?
I am seriously considering a course in HVAC that will cost approximately $800(US$). The vocational school estimates that it will take nine months to complete this course. I am considering distance learning (internet & snail mail) because I work full time (in unrelated industry). The school claims it is nationally recognized and that at the end of the course I will be HVAC certified and EPA approved. I have done my research & somewhat agree with their claim. I want to know, is there anyone out there who has completed such a course or similar course and can rid me of any lingering doubts before I take the plunge into this? Basically, does distance learning work? After completing the course, will I be employable in the HVAC field?

- its worthy, if the person is good stuffed knowledge
- I take distant learning classes and I am halfway through my degree. I recommend that you do not do this through an online college. Go through an actual accredited physical college or I'm afraid it won't count. I am taking online courses through my local college. Contact a school in your area -- they all have distant learning classes - and they can refer you to the correct program so your money will not be wasted.
- I've never taken this exact course. However, I have taken MANY MANY online courses, distance learning courses, whatever you want to call them, and for me there is nothing better. I can do them whenever I want, however I want, eating whatever I want, listening to whatever I want, wearing nothing if that is what I want. I LOVE online learning. Taking tests online is a breeze. I can be completely focused and not distracted by the person next to me chomping gum or ticking their pencil on the desk. UGH. I don't have to listen to a boring lecture for 4 hours while I'm starving and dying for a bathroom break. What can I say? I could go on and on! If you are a disciplined person who wants to learn, can do the work on your own, and don't need someone breathing down your back to "do your homework!" then this is the kind of learning anyone with a tight schedule would enjoy. You can do it at 2:00am if that is all the time you have to give.
- Is there a professional association that you can ask for advice? I would ask some body who represents professionals in your field, they should be able to recommend accredited training courses. Recognized does not mean accredited. you might find you have a valid diploma that means nothing to anybody who matters.
- There may some distance learning programs out there that might be good. The EPA certificate is great to have, however you will need more. Do more research not on the schools but of your potential employers. Ask them what they look for in a new hire. If you are looking at a certain school program ask a potential employer if they recognize it and accept the accreditation. Below is a link to an organization that is growing and is becoming a national standard in HVAC.
