As a doctor, would you hire a Medical Transcriptionist who just finished school and wants to work from home?

I am a young mother who is thinking of learning Medical Transcription through Penn Foster, a distance learning school. I'm just wondering if I would be able to find work once I finish. I would like to work from home and I have no medical experience. But I love to learn and I can type 70 WPM.

1. That is a very popular trend. It just depends on your ability and turn around time.
2. Getting jobs at home doing medical transcription is hard even for those of us who have experience, but in most cases if you are new to it you will have to first work on site. A lot of doctors are now going to voice recognition and steering away from using tapes or Dictaphone to transcribe their work. Coding is a better paying job and is not as hard as transcription and there are hospitals that are placing their workers at home to do this. Transcription is a very stressful job and very demanding. One has to maintain a high line count to even keep your job. I speak from experience, I have been doing this for 25 years and we were sent home to transcribe, but the person who was head over the computers never maintained the equipment and they brought us back in on a late shift. Look into other options first.
3. Penn Foster has an excellent program for Medical Transcription!! I attended when they were Education Direct and am so very glad that I did :) Being a medical transcriptionist is not a very difficult job to learn, but it can be tough at times (research and foreign docs). I really enjoy doing this and I was hired before I was done with my program. I have worked for a couple of companies that advertise stating they want someone with 3 or more years (when I only had maybe 6 months or so) experience and they will still hire you even if you are new. I would strongly encourage you to do this if it sounds interesting to you. The transcription field is such a unique way to work (I work from home) and be able to feel like you are really making a difference and the pay is pretty good to. 5. Another good site is www.MTDaily.com It has available jobs and requirements. Most MT companies offer "at home" jobs and some supply all the equipment. They will usually hire you with education and/or experience. They have a test you take when you submit your resume and, they will notify you if they are interested. I work at home for MedQuist and have done so for 9 years. They will hire you with MT education and/or experience. Good Luck!
