  1. According to The Chronicle of Higher Education (2004-2005), you can expect a salary anywhere from around $30,000 to $70,000, depending on the institution and beginning rank. Typically, you would start out as an instructor or assistant professor, depending on your highest level of education and/or experience. Generally, the higher your level of education, the higher the salary; however, unless you are a published Ph.D. with 5-10 years of academic experience, you should expect to start near the bottom at at community college. Even then, unless you are at a well-named school, the pay scale in academia is still quite low. There are things, however, you can do to supplement your income including adjunct work, online teaching, tutoring, text reviews, etc. Best of luck!
