Masters Degrees in Canada?

Hi... I'm interested in hearing from people who have taken a masters or doctoral degree in Canada [I'm considering history or Canadian studies]... how is this generally funded? I've heard it's quite a bit different than undergrad in that there are work options and research grants, more scholarships, etc. I need to know if I will be able to make enough doing my graduate work to not have to do other work outside of school but still "balance the books"... i.e. just be able to focus on studying and study-related stuff. Thanks for your help!!

  1. You'd be very fortunate to find a full fellowship for your masters, but it is possible. I had a very good fellowship for mine, and it covered about half the costs, maybe a bit more. In addition to the fellowship, you can probably make some money tutoring and instructing some undergrad classes. Unexpected opportunities often arise - for example, I was appointed as acting dean for a couple of months when the dean was ill - just to do the absolute essentials, but it brought in extra money. Every university will be different, so you need to figure out what some options are at different schools. Here are lists of Canadian universities in case that may be helpful to you. Best of luck with it.
